Tata Motors recently launched the Harrier EV as its flagship new electric SUV, which will directly compete with the Mahindra XEV 9e, which has already established itself in the market.
Although full specifications and pricing are yet to be revealed, Tata Motors has announced the base price of the Harrier EV at Rs 21.49 lakh. This is just Rs 40,000 cheaper than the XEV 9e, which is priced at Rs 21.90 lakh, both prices ex-showroom.
While we can’t compare specifications right now, in this article, we take a closer look at what features you get in the base variants of both SUVs and which variant is a better value for your money.
Exterior Features
Exterior-wise, the Harrier EV has a few additional features over the XEV 9e, such as puddle lamps, auto-folding ORVMs, an integrated side step, and dual-tone color shades.

It has alloy wheels, although their size is slightly smaller than Mahindra’s steel wheels.
However, the XEV 9e has illuminated front and rear logos and auto headlamps and wipers.
Interior Features
In terms of equipment, the XEV 9e has a clear edge over the Harrier EV. The XEV 9e not only has a bigger infotainment and driver display, but it also gets an additional screen for the passenger right from the base variant, also it gets Apple CarPlay and Android.
The auto is also wireless, while the Harrier has a wired one. The rear seats are also more comfortable as they have a reclining function and a fold-down armrest.
The Harrier EV strengthens its position to some extent with leatherette upholstery and onboard navigation right from the base variant, but the XEV 9e impresses more with its convenience and good features.
Driving Features
As far as driving features are concerned, the Harrier EV has a few more features, along with terrain modes – Normal, Wet/Rain, and Rough Road. In comparison, the XEV 9e only gets a Snow mode, which comes in the higher trim of the Harrier.ev.
The latter also gets vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-load charging capabilities, which Mahindra doesn’t have completely.
A unique difference between the two SUVs is the Drift mode on the Harrier EV and the Boost mode on the XEV 9e.
Tata Harrier EV vs. Mahindra XEV 9e
Safety Features On the safety front, while both SUVs are basically evenly matched, the Harrier EV gives an advantage with hill descent/ascent control and a traction control system.
What’s the Opinion?
Priced just Rs 40,000 higher, the Mahindra XEV 9e has a more tech and feature-rich interior, while the Harrier.ev has more safety and driving-related features.
It should be noted that both the SUVs are fundamentally quite different – the XEV 9e is a born-electric coupe-SUV, while the ICE-converted Harrier.ev is more conventional in its body style.
However, both the SUVs are rear-wheel drive, with the Harrier EV having a slight advantage with a 65kWh battery size, while the XEV 9e has a 59kWh unit.
Until the full specifications for the Harrier EV are revealed, both SUVs look pretty much equal on paper.
